This Sunday in KOTR:
Virtue: Honor—letting someone know you see how valuable they really are.
Memory Verse: “Love each other deeply. Honor others more than yourselves.” Romans 12:10, NIrV
Bible Story: The Brotherhood (David and Jonathan) • 1 Samuel 18:1-4
Bottom Line: Honor others more than yourself.
FOR LEADERS ONLY
By all accounts, Jonathan was courageous, loyal, and a great friend. Check out some of his exploits in 1 Samuel 13; 14; 19; and 23. These chapters reveal what an honorable guy Jonathan was and shed light on the significance of what he did for David in today’s Bible lesson. Without a doubt, Jonathan truly honored David, (1) showing him how valuable he really was to Jonathan. Indeed, Jonathan honored David more than himself. Instead of considering his kingdom something “to be grasped” (kind of like what [2] Jesus did when He humbled Himself by coming to live amongst us), he gave David gifts symbolic of his own role as heir apparent to the kingdom. His “you first” attitude is definitely what (3) God desires in our relationships with others. So today, focus on helping kids understand the importance of honoring others more than themselves. (4) What might God do in our lives and others’ lives if we choose to establish a lifestyle of honoring others?
